Grin and "Bear" It

Live, Love, Laugh!

Let’s face it; life often throws challenges our way and growing older does have its moments. But our outlook can determine our reactions.

We have a philosophy around here that simply states:

Live, Love, Laugh!

With this in mind, we decided to give a little twist to the expression “Grin and Bear It”, which means, “to endure or accept something ‘challenging’ with good humor”. When we were developing the Osprey Lodge theme, Tom (our fearless leader) always wanted to have a big “stuffed” bear in the lobby so grandkids and great grandkids could have their picture taken next to it. From that (somewhat politically incorrect) idea, we thought it would be neater to create a “living” mascot based on the same idea. And what if this bear was just as excited and passionate about living in the Lodge as residents were. The result of this wacky combination is seen in our “Coming Soon” intro video where “bearing it” takes on a whole new meaning.

Of course, Tom still wants the stuffed bear in the lobby. Geesh.

Okay, so back to the concept of Live, Love, Laugh!

Let’s take Live first.

We all need a purpose to live. Studies show over and over that those who contribute and are a part of something bigger then themselves are healthier and live longer. Why not support that?

For instance, if one resident was an accountant all her life, another an attorney, another managed a not-for-profit, while still another was a seamstress, we could have all the makings of a company that produces blankets for a local homeless shelter.

Next is Love. Really a “no-brainer”, it’s important to remind ourselves that loving and being loved are as essential to life as breathing and provide another key to longevity. We’re not just talking about physical love, but also a deep caring for others that can help overcome feelings of loneliness and isolation, bringing joy to the giver as well as the receiver.

Our goal is to create an atmosphere where residents can interact with others, whether through social events, intimate dinners or the encouragement of residents and relative/family/staff interaction.

Laugh. Laughter truly can be the best medicine! Again studies confirm what Proverbs 17:22 says; “A cheerful heart is good medicine…”.

Let’s face it; we all take life (and ourselves) too seriously at times. Life does have its challenging moments, but doing something simple like giving (or receiving) a smile can make a big difference in one’s day.

So with that in mind, we’re creating a Smile Enforcement Team that will go around and strictly enforce the Anti-frown Rule. Anyone caught not smiling will be fined $100.00 per frown and will have their cable TV cut off for a week while having to watch video re-runs of Gilligan’s Island.

Just Kidding…Geeessh! Lighten up!
